Kingdom Rush 6 Genesis TD Genesis UI and Upgrade Rework

Blue is gone. Global tower upgrades are back. Heroes and spells still level on their own trees.

UI Rework

On 11 September 2026 Ironhide published Genesis Devlog #28. Two demo complaints got official answers. The blue interface is gone. The individual tower-level grind is gone. Global tower upgrades from the original trilogy are back. This page is the patch-in-advance note for launch week, not a rumor sheet.

If you only played the Next Fest demo, treat this as a rules change. Do not copy June sell timings. Read the upgrade planner after this article, then the devlogs index.

What the UI actually changed

Ironhide went back to wood and iron panels like the first Kingdom Rush. Every screen got the same pass: victory, defeat, the quick menu, and the panels you open mid-stage. The old interface was designed screen-first and looked worse on PC. The rework is the answer to the “bye bye blue UI” headline on the official newsroom.

Practical effect for players:

  • Mid-stage panels should read like classic Kingdom Rush, not a blue overlay.
  • Pause, rally, and spell buttons stay where thumbs expect them. See Controls for the click/tap language.
  • Encyclopedia, Heroes, Towers, Spells, and Upgrades still live on the world-map bar. The wood sheet in our screenshots is that family of UI, not a different game.

Tower upgrades: global board, not per-pad grind

Demo feedback called individual tower leveling a grind. Devlog #28 is explicit: global tower upgrades are back, the system from the original trilogy. You spend campaign stars on four families (archers, barracks, mages, artillery) and every tower of that family benefits.

Towers still have an upgrade tree. Reaching the top of that tree still unlocks the third skill. Nothing of the skill identity is lost. What is lost is the feeling that every pad is a separate RPG character you have to feed.

That is why the upgrade planner on this wiki now tells you to spread stars across families, not to babysit one Archer Garrison’s personal XP bar.

Heroes and spells still have trees

Heroes and spells keep their own levels and upgrade trees. Ironhide wants you to shape them and feel progression. To keep switching cheap, any hero or spell behind your highest-level ones earns double XP until it catches up. You can bench Zefira for a dragon without throwing a campaign of XP in the bin.

That double-XP rule is the missing sentence in most “best hero” videos filmed on the demo. Pairing advice on the two-hero system still holds. The cost of swapping is lower than the demo taught you.

Livestream

Ironhide scheduled a walkthrough and Q&A with game designer Juan Andrés and community manager Octarina for Tuesday 15 September 2026, 12:00 Uruguay time (11:00 AM EDT). The official reminder is the YouTube live embed on this page (w05OZQ7bfbU). Topics listed on Steam news:

  • A full tour of the reworked UI
  • How global tower upgrades work now
  • Other changes since the demo build
  • Live chat questions

Watch it for the reasoning. Use this wiki for the spend order and the launch calendar. The full game is still scheduled for 24 September 2026.

What this does not change

  • Eighteen campaign stages, fifteen towers, twelve heroes, nine spells.
  • Two heroes per stage on Veteran. One hero in Classic Mode.
  • Iron mode still locks a kit. Global stars still buff the families you brought.
  • Steam remains a premium roster pitch. Mobile may still IAP extra unlocks. See the hero roster.

How to play the week of launch

  1. Wishlist or pre-order. Links.
  2. Spend the first stars on a mixed global board. Upgrade planner.
  3. Level Gerald and Zefira; if you swap, trust double XP. Gerald, Zefira, Oni.
  4. Ignore any guide that still tells you to grind each tower pad as its own RPG.

Genesis is a better game because the demo players complained. That is the whole story of Devlog #28. The updates hub will add a dated patch note if 24 September ships a different board than this article describes.
